Anonymization techniques are attributed a special role in the implementation of legal obligations, such as technical-organizational measures for privacy-friendly technology design. Moreover, they are regarded as an antidote to the broad scope of the General Data Protection Regulation, which declares that it does not have jurisdiction over "anonymous data". It is currently unclear whether and to what extent technical anonymization takes into account the legal requirements for anonymization. This article outlines conceptual equivalences and differences.
