Today, the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) published current figures on the travel behavior of German consumers for the year 2022. There was a strong increase of 78 percent in foreign travel in particular compared with the previous year 2021, when high travel restrictions were still in place. These figures are based on data on travel behavior from the statistics on demand for tourism services.
These are further details:
- In 2022, German travelers took a total of 222 million private and business trips with at least one overnight stay in Germany or abroad. This was 24 percent more than in 2021, a year marked by the Corona pandemic, but 15 percent less than in the pre-crisis year of 2019.
- Foreign travel increased by a full 78 percent over 2021, yet remained 13 percent below pre-crisis 2019 levels.
- The distribution between domestic and international travel returned to pre-crisis levels, with international travel accounting for 39 percent, compared with 38 percent in 2019, and 25 percent and 27 percent, respectively, during the pandemic-impacted years of 2020 and 2021, indicating a shift towards domestic travel.
- The most popular destinations for foreign travel in 2022 were: Italy (14 percent), Austria (14 percent), Spain (eleven percent), France (seven percent) and the Netherlands (seven percent).
