As part of the project 'Youth and Consumption II: Participation and Communication Formats for Sustainable Consumption', ConPolicy investigated youth-specific participation formats in the field of sustainability on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency. In July 2022, the German Federal Environment Agency published the first partial report of the study, which presents results on success factors and recommendations for action for the design of youth participation.
In the study, an influence model for successful youth participation was first developed on the basis of a literature review and validated through interviews with experts. Furthermore, success factors of youth participation were determined by means of qualitative surveys with young people and confirmed by a quantitative survey.
Overall, the results show that important factors for successful youth participation are the effectiveness and visibility of one's own involvement. In this context, target group-specific differences were identified. In addition, it was shown that young people are significantly motivated by group dynamics and would also like to see more diversity in future structures.
