Trustee models of data governance aim to bridge the gap between the informational self-determination of data subjects and the harnessing of their data for value chains. These are framed in the policy context of the EU Data Governance Act and the EU's quest for data sovereignty. The paper presents different data trust models and discusses the opportunities for collective agency vis-à-vis large internet platforms, but also challenges such as funding mode, types of data storage, and longer-term power asymmetries.
