The current environmental awareness study is the twelfth survey since 1996, by which the development of environmental awareness and behavior in Germany is researched every two years. The studies are carried out on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Federal Environmental Agency (UBA). They help to provide a socio-scientifically sound basis for environmental policy and environmental communication.

People in Germany expect that environmental and climate protection will be more integrated into other policy areas. The majority of respondents appear to require a fundamental policy change in the three key policy areas of energy, agriculture and transport policy. Environmental and climate protection should play a stronger role in these areas and also shape them more clearly.
