Privacy protection is one of the issues with which consumer policy has been very active in recent years. In order for consumers to be able to protect their privacy themselves to some extent, the German Federal Data Protection Act provides, among other things, that consumers have a right to demand information from companies about the data that is stored about them. Moreover, they also have the right to have stored data corrected or deleted. However, many consumers often do not know that they have these rights. It is also not clear which companies collect personal information and it is costly to make requests for information.
As a part of the innovation project Datenschutz-Auskunftsportal (Privacy Information Portal), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, IT solutions were developed which would, on the one hand, simplify the system for consumers to exercise their right to information. On the other hand, these tools must should meet the needs of companies to effectively and economically process the requests for information. ConPolicy conducted the project together with the ULD Schleswig-Holstein and Consist Software Solutions GmbH.
As part of the project, expert workshops as well as an online survey were carried out, in which approximately 180 institutions participated. Moreover, catalogues of requirements, IT concepts and implementation models were developed.
