In this study, we present the results of a representative survey concerning the German "Mietpreisbremse" (rental control legislation). 1,008 German tenants were asked concerning their knowledge about the law, the potential use of their rights, practical impediments as well as fears of taking advantage of the law. The results point out that knowledge of the law is generally low. Furthermore, impediments exist which discourage tenants of making use of their rights. Among these are the difficulty of finding out the amount of the previous rent for the same object and the fear of impairing the relationship with the landlord or even being told to leave the apartment.
