Today, the digital association Bitkom published the results of a recent consumer survey on smart home applications in Germany. According to the results, the number of German consumers using smart home applications such as connected robotic vacuum cleaners, smart lamps or video surveillance continues to grow. By now, 41 percent of German consumers use connected and remotely controllable devices in their homes.
For this representative survey, Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom conducted telephone interviews in June and July 2021 with 1,269 people in Germany aged 16 and older, including 519 smart home users.
These are further details:
- Currently, 41 percent of German consumers use smart home applications in their homes – in 2020 this number was only at 37 percent and in 2019 31 percent.
- The most used applications include smart lamps and lights (29 percent / 2020: 23 percent), smart video surveillance (23 percent / 2020: 16 percent), smart alarm systems (21 percent / 2020: 18 percent), smart shutters or awnings (13 percent / 2020: eleven percent), robotic lawnmowers (16 percent /2020: eight percent), robotic vacuum cleaners (13 percent / 2020: nine percent) and smart washing machines or refrigerators (four percent).
- Consumers justified the use of smart home applications with an increase in comfort and quality of life (78 percent), increased security of their own home (69 percent), better energy efficiency (62 percent), the possibility of remote access to household appliances (26 percent) and financial savings (21 percent).
Bernhard Rohleder, Bitkom CEO, commented: "Most smart home systems are uncomplicated to use at home, install and expand as needed. The devices from the individual manufacturers are becoming increasingly compatible with each other, so that they can be networked together or controlled via a common platform. Smart home applications make life more comfortable, safer and also more climate-friendly. When it comes to smart home devices in particular, you shouldn't reach down into the junk box, but look out for products certified to international standards. They make smart home applications extremely secure against external attacks. Users also have a role to play here, for example when it comes to protecting their own WLAN or regularly updating the devices."
