DigitalizationChatGPT: One-fifth of Germans have already tried it – or never heard of it

Today, the digital association Bitkom published the results of a representative survey on ChatGPT and similar applications based on generative artificial intelligence (AI). It shows that one-fifth of German consumers said they had already used ChatGTP, while a similarly high proportion had never heard of it.

For this study, Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom interviewed a total of 1,002 people in Germany aged 16 and above about ChatGTP by telephone.

These are further details:

  • 19 percent of respondents said they had already used ChatGPT, 25 percent could imagine doing so in the future, while 21 percent had never heard of it before.
  • Among 16- to 29-year-olds, 37 percent have already tried ChatGPT, compared to 20 percent among 30- to 49-year-olds, 18 percent among the 50- to 64-year-olds, and just 2 percent among the elderly of 75 years and older.
  • German consumers expected ChatGPT and other AI-based systems to change their life (67 percent) and wanted more knowledge about AI applications to be provided, as it would play an increasingly important role in everyday life (61 percent). 50 percent of respondents saw AI as a great opportunity for more digital participation and think that it would make it easier to navigate the Internet (49 percent).
  • However, respondents were also critical, for example, saying that they were afraid of AI applications (44 percent), that ChatGTP and other systems should be banned in schools and universities (51 percent) and that these applications would make certain professions redundant in the future (41 percent).

Achim Berg, Bitkom President, noted: "We are currently experiencing how artificial intelligence is entering our professional and private everyday lives. In the future, many tasks will be easier, faster, and better with AI support. That's why we need to start today to empower everyone to be able to use these technologies. With AI that understands our language, the barrier to entry into the digital world will be set at zero."
