Electricity pricesDynamic electricity tariffs: Potentials, challenges and lack of consumer information

According to the German law, all electricity suppliers must offer dynamic electricity tariffs from January 2025. However, according to a survey by the Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv), half of the households are not aware of dynamic electricity tariffs at all and 81% of households feel that they are poorly informed or not informed at all. Yet many households could save money with a smart electricity meter, especially those with electric cars, heat pumps or photovoltaic systems.

The background:

With dynamic electricity tariffs, the price per kilowatt hour adapts flexibly to the current market price. The electricity price can fluctuate hourly or daily, depending on supply and demand on the electricity exchange. This enables consumers to make targeted use of electricity at times when prices are low. However, these price fluctuations on the exchanges do not stop at record highs, which became apparent during the energy price crisis. In addition, dynamic electricity tariff offers have so far lacked transparency in pricing and have a complicated structure. As each provider can structure their tariffs differently, consumers find it difficult to make a clear comparison.
