Today, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) presented results of the survey ‘Eco barometer 2021’ on the consumption of organic food among German consumers. According to the results, 38 percent of respondents said they either frequently or exclusively purchase organic products. This long-term trend towards greater demand of organic products is reflected in an estimated market turnover of 6.8 percent of organic products.
For this representative survey, the infas Institute for Applied Social Science, on behalf of the BMEL, conducted telephone surveys between September and October 2021 with around 1,022 consumers aged 14 and above.
These are the key findings:
- 38 percent of German consumers said they either frequently (33 percent) or exclusively (five percent) buy organic products. 47 percent said they would do so in the future – either frequently (41 percent) or exclusively (six percent).
- Organic eggs, fruits and vegetables were most frequently purchased, followed by potatoes, dairy products and meat and sausages. Nine out of ten respondents bought their organic products in the supermarket.
- Regional origin, animal welfare, a healthy diet and natural foods were each decisive factors in the purchase of organic groceries for more than 90 percent of respondents.
- 82 percent of consumers knew what the German organic label looks like without seeing it.
