Digitalization German consumers generally familiar with concept of artificial intelligence

Today, the digital association Bitkom published new figures from a representative survey on knowledge in dealing with artificial intelligence (AI). According to the survey, 92 percent of German consumers said they were now familiar with AI, compared to 86 percent a year earlier.
For this study, Bitkom Research conducted telephone interviews with a total of 1,002 people in Germany aged 16 and older on behalf of the digital association Bitkom.

These are further details:

  • 92 percent of people in Germany said they were now familiar with artificial intelligence, compared to 86 percent a year ago.
  • Fifty-six percent of respondents felt able to explain the term "artificial intelligence," while 36 percent said they had heard of it before.
  • Awareness of other technologies and terms also increased, with 39 percent having never heard of the metaverse before, compared to 75 percent last year. 38 percent of respondents were unaware of blockchain (compared to 53 percent last year) and chatbots were unknown to only 21 percent (compared to 28 percent last year).
  • Many respondents were unsure about the meaning of cryptocurrency (44 percent) and virtual reality (30 percent), while they better understood and explained terms such as apps (81 percent), cookies (73 percent), cyber-attacks (72 percent) and 5G (69 percent).

Sophie Vogt-Hohenlinde, Bitkom expert for digital participation, commented: "The most important terms in digitization should be as understandable as possible for everyone. We therefore need accessible offers to clarify questions directly in the personal living environment and to sustainably strengthen technical knowledge. The fact that there is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding many digitalization terms shows that we need to involve the entire population: We need to take everyone on board and explain digital progress in a way that is easy to understand. This is the only way we can ensure that everyone really benefits equally from digitization."
