Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular and is being used more and more frequently. The COVID-19 pandemic has further intensified this trend. The present study found that over 90 percent of all people who generally have internet access shop at online stores at least occasionally. The majority of them make purchases on the internet once or multiple times per month. The most commonly used device for this purpose is the smartphone.

With increasing frequency of purchases and the use by most population groups, the question of data security when shopping online, and the protection of personal data, is becoming more and more important. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) aims to provide an empirical basis for answering questions regarding digital consumer protection with the present study, and the findings can be used for further sensitizing consumers to the topic of data security when shopping online.
