Consumer protectionMarket surveillance: 15 million non-compliant products sanctioned in online and retail trade

Today, the German Federal Network Agency presented the results of its market surveillance in German retail as well as online trade for the year of 2022. In total, 15 million non-compliant products were sanctioned that did not meet the legal requirements, for example by causing radio interference or having significant formal defects.

These are further details:

  • In online retail, around 2,600 conspicuous product listings were identified and deleted from sales platforms. This affected 13 million devices, including 3.2 million light effect devices such as flash cubes or disco balls for private use, which often lacked CE markings or operating instructions. Some devices with radio control were banned, as they often operated in inadmissible laser classes.
  • Another 2.8 million energy-saving devices with often questionable energy-saving functions were withdrawn from circulation. Identified product defects related to incorrect CE markings, missing German user manuals or missing service contact in Europe.
  • Around 2 million handheld transmitters and radio remote controls were banned due to unauthorized use within military frequency ranges.
  • In the German retail sector, 3,296 different types of equipment were inspected and, as a result, 23 sales bans and 1,145 requests for rectification of defects were levied – this concerned a total of 1.72 million non-compliant products.
  • These included most commonly battery chargers, which could cause interference with security-relevant radio services, military radio applications and IP services.

Klaus Müller, President of the German Federal Network Agency, commented: "The number of products we removed from the market was again very high last year. This is how we protect consumers from unsafe products."
