Consumer protectionMarket check shows that only 40 percent of foods are labeled with Nutri-Score

Today, the Consumer Association North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) published the results of a nationwide market check on food labeling with the Nutri-Score. According to the results, 40 percent of the examined food products were labeled with the Nutri-Score – an increase of seven percent to the year before.
Since 2020, the food labeling system ‘Nutri-Score’ has been introduced in Germany, which indicates differences in the nutrient composition of processed foods within a product group. Manufacturers can voluntarily choose whether to use Nutri-Score.

These are further details:

  • In total, the consumer associations examined 1,451 products from the product groups of bread and bread rolls, pizza, dairy and milk drinks, plant-based drinks and cereal with regard to the Nutri-Score.
  • 40 percent of the reviewed products carried the Nutri-Score, an increase of seven percent compared to the previous year.
  • At 70 percent, pizza was the most frequently labeled product group. Cereal and dairy, on the other hand, were the least likely to carry the Nutri-Score with 28 percent each.
  • A total of 140 of the 1,451 food products showed an improvement in nutrient composition compared to the previous year.

Nora Dittrich, nutrition expert at the Consumer Association NRW, commented: "We are calling for more speed from the food industry when it comes to the Nutri-Score. The colored nutritional value labeling can develop its informative value within a product group much better if it is used across the board. But its introduction is proceeding only slowly. That is why the Nutri-Score should become mandatory throughout Europe. It is encouraging that suppliers have improved the nutrient composition of about one tenth of the products examined over the course of the year."
