The German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) published today new figures on the production of meat substitutes in Germany. The numbers show that the production increased by 17 percent in 2021, while meat production declined by eight percent in the same period. Meat substitute products included for this purpose were, for example, vegetarian or vegan spreads or sausages, as well as soy and tofu products.

These are further details:

  • However, the market share of meat substitutes was 80 times lower than for meat products (35.6 billion Euros), even though the market value for meat products already decreased by 11.3 percent between 2019 and 2021.
  • According to the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE), per capita consumption of meat in Germany was at 55 kilograms in 2021 – compared to 2011 (62.8 kilograms per capita), this was a decrease of 12 percent and the lowest value since the beginning of recording in 1989.
