Today, the digital association Bitkom published the results of a recent consumer survey on online grocery shopping. According to the results, the Corona pandemic has permanently changed shopping behavior in the food sector. 26 percent of German consumers now order groceries online at least from time to time.
For this representative survey, Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom conducted telephone interviews in June and July 2021 with a total of 1,007 people in Germany aged 16 and above about their preferences when buying groceries.
These are further details:
- 26 percent of respondents said they order groceries online at least occasionally. Prior to the pandemic, only 16 percent made use of this option.
- 32 percent of 16- to 29-year-olds and 36 percent of 30- to 49-year-olds said they frequently or occasionally ordered food and drinks online. Among people aged 50 to 64, 26 percent used this online option and just eight percent among older people aged above 65.
- Consumers made online orders in the following ways: Via online farmer’s stores or vegetable box subscriptions (ten percent), online supermarkets such as rewe.de, bringmeister.de or Amazon Fresh (eight percent), online platforms such as eBay (seven percent) and new delivery services with instant service such as Gorillas or Flink (seven percent).
- During the Corona pandemic, more than half (53 percent) of respondents purchased groceries online for the first time. Among seniors aged 65 and older, this growth was greatest at 68 percent.
Bernhard Rohleder, Bitkom CEO, commented: "The pandemic has given online grocery a sustained strong boost. The changes triggered by the Corona crisis are also lasting in food retailing. Many people tried new ways of shopping during the Corona pandemic and purchased groceries via the Internet for the first time. In the meantime, the discomfort of shopping in local stores has subsided for many. It's not just new business models, such as express grocery deliveries in just a few minutes, that are now ensuring more people buy groceries online - and completely independently of Corona."
