ConPolicy contribution to the annual conference 2024 of the Plattform PrivatheitThe perception of privacy risks in the metaverse by consumers

The Plattform Privatheit supports research projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on the protection of privacy in the digital world. In this context, the Plattform Privatheit organises an annual conference, which was held on October 17th and 18th in 2024 under the theme ‘Freedom in digital infrastructures’

Dr. Otmar Lell, Project Manager at the ConPolicy Institute for Consumer Policy, presented initial results from the PRiME project (PRivacy in the Metaverse) at the conference together with Tom Hubert, a PhD student and research assistant at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. The risks of current business models in the metaverse for data protection and personal rights are high, but are not yet widely known. This was demonstrated by the focus group discussions held as part of PRiME. Design proposals developed in the project were also presented to enable users to protect themselves from privacy risks in the metaverse, as well as related legal issues, especially with regard to the possibility of prior consent through Personal Information Management Systems (PIMS).
