Today, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) presented its latest monitoring report on sustainable vacations 2021/22. According to the results, more than two-thirds of German consumers are in favor of environmentally and socially responsible vacations – the highest share since the first survey in 2013/14.
This BMUV-funded monitoring report by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Urlaub und Reisen (FUR) examines how sustainably German consumers travel as well as their attitudes toward sustainable vacations based on selected indicators.
These are further results for the factual travel behavior:
- Compared to the last survey in 2018/19, the share of German consumers who made CO2 offsets increased from two to nine percent for longer vacation trips of five days or more, and from six to 17 percent for short vacations.
- 13 percent of respondents booked offers with an eco-label for longer vacation trips (previously six percent) and 22 percent (previously eight percent) for short vacations.
- Due to the Corona pandemic, key indicators of sustainability-related holiday consumption such as transport performance or travel duration have dropped significantly. This has eased the burden on the environment and climate compared to previous years.
Steffi Lemke, German Federal Environment Minister, commented: "More and more consumers want to travel in an environmentally and socially responsible way. This requires attractive arrival and departure options using public transport and information on sustainable leisure activities and climate-friendly accommodation. Tourism in harmony with nature and the landscape appeals to people and strengthens the local economy. The demand is already there."
