Today, the digital association Bitkom published new survey results on online payment methods for consumers. According to the results, 42 percent of German consumers preferred online payment services such as PayPal, Klarna or Amazon Payments for their online purchases.
For this representative survey, Bitkom Research, on behalf of the digital association Bitkom, interviewed 1,109 people in Germany aged 16 and above online in October 2021, including 1,048 online shoppers, about their preferences and experiences with payment services online.
These are further details:
- 42 percent of German consumers said they preferred online payment services such as PayPal, Klarna or Amazon Payments.
- A further 32 percent of online shoppers preferred to buy on account – this payment method was particularly popular among those aged above 65 years (48 percent).
- Far less online shoppers, on the other hand, preferred online payment by credit card (eleven percent), direct debit (seven percent), instant transfer (four percent) or installment purchase (two percent) – so-called 'Buy Now Pay Later'.
Bernhard Rohleder, Bitkom CEO, noted: "Consumers prefer to use online payment services and thus rely on secure, simple and fast checkout at the digital store checkout. With the right mix of digital payment methods, online retailers can significantly reduce purchase abandonment rates. Customers have numerous opportunities to check products and providers for reliability and should make use of them."
