How can and should privacy be protected in the metaverse? What measures and instruments are needed to ensure that users do not become completely transparent in these interonnected virtual worlds networks and that their personal rights are protected? And how can the privacy and data protection of the people behind their avatars be guaranteed? These are just a few examples of questions that users will increasingly be confronted with in the context of the metaverse. After all, even in virtual space, it must be ensured that (sexual) harassment or insults, for example, do not go unpunished.

In order to exercise one's own informational self-determination as a comprehensive fundamental right, the joint research project "PRiME – Privacy in the metaverse" is researching and testing data protection and the protection of personal rights in the metaverse. By developing design requirements and evaluation metrics for developers and operators of metaverse platforms, the PRiME project aims to help ensure that the privacy of citizens is also protected in the metaverse.

The three-year project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is part of the interdisciplinary privacy platform.
